Analysis of the drill core will allow proper designing of borefields for heat storage

[4.4.2025] During the spring of 2025, two exploratory wells - a hydrogeological well and a core well - were completed at the RINGEN Research Centre. The drill core from the 500 m deep core well is being scanned and examined in detail in the geothermic laboratory at the RINGEN Research Centre. The measured values of thermal conductivity and other parameters will allow us to properly design the borefields for underground thermal energy storage that will be created here in the coming years.
Both boreholes were drilled as part of the European PUSH-IT project, which focuses on research and application of Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES). This technology will enable us to compensate the seasonal mismatch in energy production and consumption in the future and, in combination with other renewable sources, will facilitate the transition to carbon-free energy.
