PUSH-IT project focuses on undergroung thermal energy storage

Project title PUSH-IT (Piloting Underground Storage of Heat in geothermal reservoirs)
Project description

The project focuses on the storage of thermal energy in the rock environment. Six test sites in Europe will be used to create underground reservoirs, which may consist of newly drilled boreholes (BTES), but also existing water-filled mine workings (MTES) or underground aquifers (ATES) that store heat in naturally occurring water reservoirs. A total of 19 partners from all over Europe are working together on the project, with the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands as leader. One of the test sites is also the RINGEN research centre in Litoměřice, where the activities of Czech Geological Survey and the Faculty of Science of Charles University will take place.

Research activities
  • Rock environment properties & hydrogeology & in situ data
  • Geophysical surveying, carotation and seismicity monitoring
  • Data analysis and modelling
Main project goals
  • Overcome the seasonal mismatch between heat demand and heat production using high-temperature underground heat storage
  • Improve different technologies and approaches to storing and recovering heat from underground storage systems
  • Demonstrate underground heat storage as a safe, reliable, affordable and economically viable solution that fits regulatory framework
Main outputs and results
  • Creation of a database of thermohydraulic properties of the studied horizons
  • Report on stress field and monitoring of natural and induced seismicity
  • Creation of a comprehensive geological model of the sites
  • Improvement of technologies and approaches to storage and recovery of heat from underground reservoirs
  • Adoption of socio-economic aspects (regulation, safety of operation, public acceptance of new technology, removal of barriers to future implementation)
  • In RINGEN research center in Litoměřice, two exploration and monitoring wells to a depth of 550 m (or 200 m) are to be built. They will provide important data for the planned SYNERGYS project, aiming to drill functional underground heat storage boreholes
